Affiliate Marketing For Beginners
If you are here because you are exhausted with the nine to five and dream of a better life where you don’t have to exchange your time for money then you are not alone.
These days, many people, like you, are turning to the internet to try and work out how to make money online. This is because they have realized everyday people are making incredible amounts of money online. With the right information and support you can also achieve this.
Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money online as you don’t have to create your own products and you don’t have to invest money up front.
If you are new to the ‘make money online’ world, then you are probably wondering what affiliate marketing is.
In simple terms, affiliate marketing is a system where you basically promote somebody else’s product and whenever a sale is made you get a share of the money. Some companies pay commissions as low as 3 percent but others are willing to pay you much more. There are even some affiliate marketing companies who will pay you as much as 75 to 100 percent commission. The reason for this is, they are making more money on the back end and their focus is on the life time value of the customer.
There are many different products you can promote as an affiliate, such as software, pet food or training, health, travel and the list goes on as the opportunities are endless.
Using a few specific strategies you can easily turn affiliate marketing into a full-time online business. If you are wondering what particular steps you need to take to be a successful affiliate marketer, then don’t worry I will get to that.
The number one decision to make when you are starting out, is how you will deliver your content so that you can build your audience. Your content can be delivered via a blog, a podcast, social media or a YouTube Channel.
Blogging is one of the best ways to create a long term online business and an audience. When you build a blog, you are creating a business where you are in control as you own your website.
Compare this to a YouTube channel, although you own the content you upload to YouTube, you do not own your channel. This means that YouTube could shut you down at anytime or stop you from earning money from your channel. Also, platforms like Facebook and YouTube often change the rules and their algorithms, which could suddenly have a negative impact on your business.
I always recommend starting out with a blog and as you grow your business and become more confident in running your blog, then you can always convert your blog posts into video or a podcast to grow your reach by using these platforms.
Affiliate blog definition
Is an affiliate blog different to just a blog?
Yes, the main difference is an affiliate blog needs to focus on the audience. If you are blogging as a hobby then you can blog about what ever you want. However, as an affiliate blogger you are writing about a particular area and your focus is on providing value to your readers. It’s less about what you would like to write and more about what your audience would like to read.
Your affiliate blog can be focused on many different topics. For example, if you are an animal lover you could have a blog about pets, which provides great content all about pets and helps people solve common problems. You would also have affiliate links in key places on your blog to promote different products to your audience to help them solve their problems, whether it’s pet training or special pet food and so on.
Pros and Cons of Affiliate Marketing
1. Low Investment
You don’t haven’t to spend any time or money creating a product. If you already have a blog and you have a good number of people coming to your blog, affiliate marketing is an additional way of monetizing your blog. If you are starting out and would like to keep the cost at zero while you establish your blog then I would recommend joining Wealthy Affiliate for free as you will receive two free domains, free hosting and free training.
2. Uncomplicated system
You find a product that will be beneficial to your audience and place your link within your blog post. You don’t have to deal with customer support, complaints, etc. To establish and sustain a trusting relationship with your audience it’s best to only promote good quality products.
Although you do not own the product you’re promoting, you own your blog and all the content you add to your blog.
4. Low risk
If you are promoting a certain product and it isn’t converting very well, you can just replace it with another one without it costing you anything.
You can work on your affiliate marketing blog business when it’s convenient for you. You don’t have someone else’s deadlines to meet, just your own. Whether you put in a couple of hours a day or a week, you can build your blog whilst working full time or studying. But the more time you invest into your blog the quicker you will be able to achieve your financial goals.
This really is a side hustle which you can grow into a business that in time replaces your earnings from your job.
7. Passive income
You truly can earn money while you sleep! A blog post you write today could continue to generate you affiliate commissions for years, with very little additional work from you.
Creating content can be time consuming particularly at the start. Once you get into a writing rhythm it’s not as time consuming and there are various strategies you can use to speed up the process, such as outsourcing.
2. Power and Control
You have no control over the product and the customer service. Your audience trusting you is the key to your blog becoming a money making machine. Therefore choose your affiliate products very carefully as a bad product or a company with poor customer service will reflect negatively on you.
3. No Guarantees
There are no guarantees that you will make money with an affiliate product. To increase your chances you will need a very good understanding of what your audience is looking for and then put the right products in front of them.
It can take time before you start seeing money, this is where most people give up but the ones who persevere are able to truly change their financial future.
In some cases Affiliate links can be hijacked. This is where you have done all the hard work but someone else gets the commission. There isn’t anything you can do about this but I wouldn’t worry too much about it as it’s not something that happens too often.
6. New Customers
You have to continuously generate new leads to get people to see and click on your affiliate products. However, as you become more established in your business you will learn how to select the right products, which pay you more than just a one time commission. You will also learn how to increase the life value of each lead you generate by incorporating email marketing into your business structure.
How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog – Step by Step Guide
To get your affiliate marketing blog off to a brilliant start use this five-step method.
Step 1 – Choose your niche.
Pick a niche that you are interested in and you know a lot about or are passionate to learn about.
You can basically choose any topic you have a passion for as long as it has products that a lot of people are willing to spend money on. This could be related to children, home, travel, pets, health, relationships, etc.
It’s always best to niche down. Instead of picking something like weight loss, which is very broad, it’s better to be more specific and specialize in something, such as the Keto diet.
Step 2 – Create your content.
Produce good quality content that provides value to your readers and attractive images.
For your reader to stay on your post and come back again and again, eventually becoming raving fans and regular customers, your content must help answer your readers questions and help to solve their problems.
In fact, Gary V says you have to “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook”. This basically means you need to provide value, value, value and only then put an offer in front of your reader.
Here’s a link to Gary V’s book if you’re interested in reading more about this approach. https://learnaffiliatemarketing.org/Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook
How do you write good quality content?
The best way to do this is to put yourself in the shoes of your reader and figure out the kind of information your reader would find useful. In other words, what are the kind of things they are struggling with.
For example, if you’re in the baby niche, parents often have difficulties related to feeding their child, getting their child to sleep, toilet training, etc. If you are providing valuable tips, techniques and strategies that help your reader with these type of challenges then it will be easy for you to grow your fan base.
Top three tips to make your content more readable.
- Break up your content with good quality images.
- Have short paragraphs that are 5 or 6 lines
- Engage your reader by make your content conversational.
Step 3 – Find products to promote.
Join affiliate programs in your niche that provide good quality products. It’s better if these products are ones you have tried as you will be able to answer any questions your readers have. Also if you like the product, this will come across to your reader and he or she is much more likely to buy the product.
There are many different affiliate networks you can partner with and most of them are very easy to join. In most cases you just need to complete a form but occasionally some will ask you to complete a few further steps, such as a Skype interview. Some also require the details of your blog or website, so it’s good to have your blog launched and containing at least ten decent articles before you start contacting these network.
Here are some affiliate networks you can start out with:
- Rakuten Marketing – They have a wide variety of products you can choose from and great affiliate support. The only disadvantage with this network is you have to apply to each brand individually, which can be very time consuming.
- CJ Affiliates – They also have a wide variety of products and are a very reputable company. The application process is tough but certainly worth it. This network has a payment threshold of $50.
- MaxBounty – Is a CPA (Cost Per Action) network, which means the affiliate gets paid once someone performs a particular action such as filling in a form. This network also has a variety of products you can promote. It can be very difficult to get approved as an affiliate. MaxBounty has a payment threshold of $100.
- Shareasale – Again this has a wide range of merchants for you to choose from but you need to apply to each on individually. This network has a payment threshold of $50, which means affiliates do not receive their commissions until they have earned over this amount.
- Clickbank – Has less products to promote then some of the other networks but you have the opportunity to earn commissions that are much higher. Some of the products are low quality so be very selective when deciding which products to promote.
Additionally, you can go directly to a company’s website and check if they have an affiliate program. This can usually be found at the bottom of their website site.
Step 4 – Read all about it!
Once you have signed up for a particular affiliate program, it’s time to tell your readers all about the product.
It could be as simple as talking about a particular product in your post or recommending a product that solves a problem and then having a button at the bottom of your post saying click here to read more.
You have two options, you can take your reader straight to the product sales page where they would be given more information about the product or you could send your reader to your review of the product containing your affiliate link, which will then take your reader to the sales page. I have found that sending people to a bridge page (e.g. your review post) seems to convert better.
It’s a requirement to tell your readers you have affiliate links in your post. You can do this at the beginning or somewhere in your blog post.
Always use links that have been shortened. Alternatively you can make your links more appealing with a free WordPress plugins such as Prettylinks
Step 5 – Promote your post.
When you are starting out, it’s best to begin with free advertising, whether that is social media, forums, SEO. Once you know an affiliate product converts well and you have more information you can then scale up by using paid traffic.
Social media can be a great way of promoting your blog post for free.
Join some Facebook groups that are relevant to your niche and if they allow links to be shared, then you can direct them to your post. Otherwise you can provide useful information in the group and ask people to comment or message you if they want more information. Once they have indicated they are interested then you can directly share the link to your post with them.
If you are promoting a physical product, then you can actually take some really good pictures and put these on your Instagram. You can also have your blog address in your bio.
Pinterest is a great platform to use because the pin you create today could continue to bring you traffic for many years. If you haven’t got boards related to your niche, then create some and add your Pinterest pin to the appropriate board.
